Poetry

‘There’s nothing more painful and delightful than writing’ – Hasan Erkek

Caroline Sylger Jones is a published poet whose poems have appeared in Carcanet Press anthologies, in PN Review, and in journals and papers including The Independent. She writes poems daily. Below is just one of the poems she has had published – it’s about two people spending a morning in bed.

Egyptian Cotton

Somewhere

your upper arm

lies against a sheet

me on one side of you.

Elsewhere

my ankle bone

touches the news page

of a Sunday paper.

In Egyptian cotton trousers

I am eating a hot-cross bun.

Striped cloth

encasing legs

is our soft white sheet.

My fresh-aired eyes blink at the print,

small black currants on my pink tongue.

Somewhere

elsewhere

friends go out to meet.
